Motueka

Motueka is a fast-growing town on State Highway 60 on the west side of Tasman Bay. It’s west of Māpua and only about 10 km from Kaiteriteri and the access to Abel Tasman National Park and Golden Bay via Takaka Hill.

Although it is historically best known for growing hops, it now feels more like a bustling town, catering to tourists and an expanding local community. The town sits astride the main highway, so take Old Wharf Road to Motueka Quay, which runs along the waterfront.

The photogenic Janie Seddon shipwreck is at the south end of the quay. After viewing the wreck and nearby historic wharf, park at the north end of the quay by the golf course. Wade across a modest inlet to a 6 km long but narrow sand peninsula.

The ocean side of the spit has a sandy beach, and it makes for an unusual walk as well as a nice spot to hang out. If you don’t want to get your feet wet, you can access the spit from the north end of Staples Street.
