Janie Seddon

The Janie Seddon shipwreck has become quite a popular shot on Instagram, especially at low tide with some colour in the sky. These shots were taken at high tide in the middle of the day, and we didn’t have time to wait around!

The ship has an interesting history. It was a military ship in WW1 and WW2 and was rumoured to have fired the first shot in WW2 (!) After the war, it was purchased as a fishing boat, but it proved unsatisfactory for this purpose. The owner, Talleys, left it to rot at the wharf. And it did, leaving the popular photo shot today.

The wreck is obvious from the road, and you will see it in Motueka, Tasman Bay, shortly after turning onto Motueka Quay from Old Wharf Road and just before the historic wharf.
