Maukatia Bay

Maukatia Bay

Maukatia Bay is on the south side of Otakamiro Point and the gannet colony. It only takes about 15 minutes to walk there from Muriwai Beach along the Muriwai Gannet Colony Walkway. You can also drive along Waitea Road to the car park above the beach. It is a couple of minutes to walk down to the beach.

The beach is a typical Waitakere west coast beach, surrounded by rugged cliffs and hills. It has the signature black sand and surf, and it’s suitable for swimming and surfing when patrolled.

The cliff above the car park was once quarried for scoria rock. However, if you look further to the south side, you can clearly see somne amazing 20 million-year-old pillow lava patterns in the cliff face.
