There are many resources to help you keep safe while hiking and exploring the NZ backcountry:

Learn how to assess the risk of different weather conditions with the NZ Mountain Safety Council.

Check up to date weather forecasts before you leave. Risks of heavy rain and fast-flooding streams and rivers are a feature of some places in NZ, especially on the West Coast of the South Island. Metservice offers a specific ‘Mountains and Parks’ forecast which other apps and services also use.

If you are heading into snowy backcountry, check for avalanche risk.
