Exploring Tatarata Point

Tatarata Point is located on the North Shore of Auckland, separating Murrays Bay from Rothesay Bay along the North Shore Coastal Walk, part of Te Araroa. This clifftop spot is notable for its views and colourful eroding cliffs adorned with pōhutukawa trees, offering a striking landscape for walkers. At low tide, you can access the multi-layered rock platform at the base of he cliffs and point. This is an ideal place to pause and even take a refreshing jump into the sea.

Best Time to Visit

To fully appreciate Tatarata Point, plan your visit during low tide. This timing reveals more of the rock platforms and pools, providing a unique opportunity to explore the area. Despite being surrounded by houses, the point has a surprisingly remote feel, adding to its charm.

Otherwise, follow the path around the top of the cliff between the north end of Murrays Bay Beach and Churchill Reserve in Rithesay Bay.

How to Get There

The point is accessible via the North Shore Coastal Walk. You can start your walk from either Murrays Bay or Rothesay Bay, both of which are easily reachable by car or public transport from Downtown Auckland via the northern motorway, Constellation Drive, East Coast Road, Sunrise Avenue and Beach Road.

Following the coastal walk, Browns Bay is north of Rothesay Bay and Mairangi Bay, and Campbells Bay is south of Murrays Bay.
