Pukerua Bay sits on the top of a hill above Plimmerton on the Kāpiti Coast. Its claim to fame is as the location for Peter Jackson’s Bad Taste. There’s not much there apart from houses, and a nearly secret cafe caravan just off Rawhiti Road. But it has a gorgeous beach, which is strictly local.
You can get down from Pukerua Beach Road, or there is a small parking area on the left with a walk down just after you start down the hill towards Paekākāriki.
The setting is dramatic and the north end of the beach is sandy and the south end is strewn with stones and driftwood, like Makara. It also includes a giant boulder with a walk-through arch. Interesting contrast, but it really excels as a beachcomber’s delight! These photos were taken over different days and capture the drama of the coast’s weather.
