Exploring Auckland's Wynyard Quarter
Wynyard Quarter is situated between the Viaduct and Westhaven Marina on the Downtown Auckland waterfront. This lively area contains modern commercial businesses and numerous apartments. A key attraction is the array of eateries along North Wharf and Jellicoe Road, offering visitors a dining experience by the water.
Historical Transformation
Originally called the Western Reclamation, Wynyard Quarter was reclaimed from Freeman’s Bay by the early 1900s. By the early 2000s, it had become a neglected industrial area with petrochemical storage facilities. A decision was made to transform it into a mixed-use space appealing to visitors. Although the redevelopment is ongoing, the area between Madden Street and the waterfront is complete. Halsey Street on the east connects with the Viaduct, while Beaumont Street on the west, known for its association with Auckland yachting, provides access to Westhaven Marina.
Key Attractions in Wynyard Quarter
Silo Park is a notable feature of Wynyard Quarter, housing a cluster of six silos (Silo 6) and a single silo (Silo 7) that were once used for cement storage. Standing 35 metres tall, Silo 6 now serves as an exhibition space, while Silo 7 hosts outdoor movies at night. Adjacent to Silo Park is the Silo Superyacht Marina, ideal for those fascinated by luxury boats. North of Silo Park, SeaLink operates a car and passenger ferry service to Aotea Great Barrier Island. Another highlight is the ASB Waterfront Theatre on Halsey Street, conveniently located near the waterfront restaurants.
and direct road access with adequate parking.
How to Get to Wynyard Quarter
A drawbridge connects Wynyard Quarter to the Viaduct for walkers. Otherwise, the area is easily accessible from the city centre. Halsey Street provides a direct connection to the east side of the Viaduct and Beaumont Street offers access from the west. There is reasonable parking, mainly on Beaumont Street.
