Windy Canyon

Discover Windy Canyon on Aotea Great Barrier Island

Windy Canyon, located on Aotea Great Barrier Island, is a remarkable short hike with breathtaking views. While some consider it among New Zealand's finest short walks, the competition is fierce. Nonetheless, this hike is a must-do, even if you choose not to continue to the summit of Hirakimata Mt Hobson.

Navigating the Trail

Windy Canypon is the first section of Palmers Track, with access near the top of Aotea Road. This is a short but striking walk that climbs about 100 metres with steep steps through a series of narrow rock clefts carved by wind erosion, gaining roughly 150–200 metres in elevation as it leads to panoramic viewpoints above the sheer volcanic ridges. The dramatic canyon walls funnel the wind, creating the gusty conditions that gave the walk its name.

The walk takes about 15 minutes each way. From the top of the ridge, you can also continue to the summit of Hirakimata Mt Hobson on the Palmer Track. This takes around 2 hours each way, or provides a connection with the multiday Aotea Track.

Unique Flora of Aotea

Windy Canyon and the high slopes of Hirakimata Mt Hobson support several unique and locally endemic plant species found only on Aotea. Most notable is the Great Barrier kānuka. You may also see a rare tree daisy adapted to exposed, windswept cliffs, along with pockets of native orchids, ferns, and low shrubland that thrive in the volcanic rock clefts. These specialised plants, shaped by isolation and the island’s rugged geology, make the area one of the most botanically distinctive areas on Aotea.

How to Get There

To reach Windy Canyon from Claris, take Hector Sanderson Road north and turn northwest onto Gray Road. Gray Road continues north and becomes Aotea Road as it rises up the east side of Hirakimata Mt Hobson. This part of the road is sealed but twisting and narrow, with a steep ascent to 300 metres. Exercise caution. The entrance to Palmers Track is near the top and clearly signposted.

Other nearby places to visit include Kaitoke Beach, Awana Bay and Harataonga Bay, where you can also explore the Harataonga Loop Track.
