Wellington Harbour Walk

Exploring Wellington's Harbour Walk

Wellington's harbour walk in Central Wellington is one of the best urban harbour walks in New Zealand. This scenic route blends cultural attractions with stunning waterfront views, making it a must-do for anyone exploring the city.

Starting Your Walk

Begin your walk at the point where Waterloo Quay transitions into Customhouse Quay. From here, follow the walkway to discover key cultural sites, including the Wellington Museum, the Portrait Gallery and Te Papa, the national museum. As you continue, you'll pass the Marina, a spot to pause and enjoy the maritime atmosphere. Just beyond the Marina is Oriental Bay, with a lovely man-made sandy beach, ideal for relaxing and swimming.

Activities and Attractions

The walkway is particularly enjoyable on a clear day, with numerous outdoor activities to engage in. Along the route, you'll find a variety of cafés and restaurants, as well as outdoorsculptures and artwork that enhance the vibrant atmosphere.

Highlights include Solace in the Wind by Max Patte, a striking bronze figure leaning into the harbour breeze, and Nga Kina by Michel Tuffery, inspired by sea urchin shells. The dramatic Kupe Statue, depicting the legendary Polynesian explorer alongside his wife and tohunga, honours Māori voyaging traditions and storytelling. Poetry is etched into the concrete in the Writers Walk, while kinetic and interactive sculptures invite engagement. Don’t miss the large, colourful “Wellington” letters at Taranaki Wharf, tilted as if caught in a gust of the city’s iconic wind.

Extending Your Journey

After exploring the main attractions, you have several options to extend your journey. You can continue beyond the beach and promenade at Oriental Bay, with a hike to the top of Mt Victoria for superb city-wide views. Alternatively, head towards Cuba Street, famous for its diverse eateries and vibrant street life.

How to Get There

This central city walk is easily accessible by public transport or on foot from various parts of the city. You can spend up to a day exploring the area, but the walk itself is about 40 minutes.
