Exploring Wainui Falls

Located on the northwest side of Abel Tasman National Park, Wainui Falls is a lesser-known attraction for those exploring the Golden Bay area northeast of Tākaka. The track to the falls is a scenic walk through native forest above the Wainui River.

The Walk to Wainui Falls

Although the walk is relatively short, it is filled with interesting features. The well-formed track winds through native forest filled with tree ferns, nikau palms, and towering rata trees, following the Wainui River upstream. You'll encounter a narrow section with a safety rail, offering views of a near sheer drop above the river. Another highlight of the walk is the swing bridge that spans the river, offering scenic views and a touch of adventure. As you approach the falls, there is a scenic section of boulders and rapids. After about 30 minutes, the track arrives at Wainui Falls, a 20-metre cascade plunging into a deep, rocky pool surrounded by moss-covered boulders and dense forest.

From the car park, it's a 1 to 1.5-hour return walk.

How to Get There

From Tākaka, take Abel Tasman Drive until you reach the signposted access road for the falls, near the end of the road. Drive down the access road and park in the large car park area.

Other places to visit along Abel Tasman Drive include Tata Beach, Ligar Bay, Abel Tasman Monument, Limestone Bay, and the Grove Track
