Discover Waikino
Waikino is a small hamlet located on State Highway 12, towards the western end of the Karangahake Gorge. This area is rich in gold mining history, and a visit to Waikino takes you back to New Zealand's industrial past. You can explore the ruins of the Victoria Battery, one of the most substantial industrial ruins in the country.
A Glimpse into Gold Mining History
In the late 19th century, Waikino was a bustling centre for gold mining. Although gold was first discovered in the area in the 1860s, it wasn't until 1897 that mining operations expanded significantly. This was marked by the development of the Victoria Battery on the north side of the Ohinemuri River. The Battery processed ore from the gorge and the Martha Mine in Waihi, which remains operational today. At its peak, the Victoria Battery was the largest industrial complex in New Zealand. Now, it stands as an intriguing industrial ruin and a window into the past.
The Waikino Rail Station
Today, Waikino's main attraction is its historic rail station, located next to State Highway 2 and a short walk from Victoria Battery. This still operates as a station for Goldfields Railway, a tourist train between Waikino and Waihi. The station also features a café and provides easy access to both the Victoria Battery ruins and the Hauraki Rail Trail. F
