Discovering Waikanae Beach

Waikanae Beach stretches along the western shores of the Kāpiti Coast, just north of Paraparaumu and easily accessible from Wellington. A perfect playground for families, walkers, and surfers, this calm, sandy beach is backed by natural dunes and framed by views of Kāpiti Island and the Tararua Range. To the rear of the dunes is the town of Waikanae.

Coastal Lifestyle & Natural Beauty

Waikanae Beach spans roughly 2.4 km, from the estuary of the Waikanae River to the Waimeha Stream. Its wide, gently sloping sands and clear shallow waters make it ideal for relaxed swimming, beachcombing, and casual strolls. The beach also hosts recreational activities like kayaking, kite-surfing, fishing, sand sailing, and nearby playgrounds.

Waikanae is known for its tranquil lifestyle, mild weather, moderate rainfall, and notably less wind than Wellington.

Wetlands, Wildlife & Spectacular Views

At the southern end, the Waikanae River estuary and adjoining wetland boardwalks offer peaceful walking trails and opportunities for birdwatching. Just offshore lies the Kapiti Marine Reserve and Kāpiti Island, where you can view Hector’s dolphins and passing whales during their migratory journeys.

Getting There & Nearby Highlights

The Metlink rail network serves Waikanae, with the Waikanae Station near the town centre being the northern terminus of the electrified Kāpiti Line. From there, you can take a bus to the beach, or walk/bike, taking the Waikanae River Track (about an hour to walk). Alternatively, the Wellington motorway provides a direct connection from downtown to the Kāpiti Coast. From the off-ramp, take Te Moana Road to Tutere Street. There are several parking areas along the street, with beach access through the dunes. At the corner of Rauparaha Street and Tutere Street, there is a park, plus cafes and restaurants.

For those staying longer, the nearby Ngā Manu Reserve offers a chance to encounter native birds, tuatara, and birdlife in a tranquil setting. A more rugged alternative is the Hemi Matenga Reserve, which provides a hike into the kohekohe forest on the steep hills east of Waikanae.
