Dramatic Tree Trunk Gorge
Tree Trunk Gorge is on the edge of the Kaimanawa Forest Park, and is a narrow volcanic canyon where the Tongariro River surges through black ignimbrite rock. The water’s power and colour, often milky turquoise, make it one of the most photographed spots in the upper river. The name Tree Trunk Gorge refers to logs once wedged in the gorge after floods. The area sits on an old ignimbrite flow from ancient eruptions of the Tongariro volcanic field.
You can view the gorge from the bridge on Tree Trunk Gorge Road, with short paths on either side leading to viewpoints. The area was a filming location in The Lord of the Rings and remains a favourite stop for photographers and for trout fishing.
Getting There
Drive south from Tūrangi for 15 km and turn left onto sealed Tree Trunk Gorge Road. The bridge is 3 km along the road, with plenty of nearby parking.
Nearby places include immediate access to the Tree Trunk Gorge Track to Urchin Campsite, Waikato Falls, Beggs Pool, Kaimanawa Road Campsite and the Waikoko Campsite. For a more substantial tramping experience, you can also access the Umukarikari Track and Mt Urchin Trig Track, which take you deeper into the mountains in Kaimanawa Forest Park.
