Exploring Devonport's Coastal Walk
Devonport, located on the North Shore of Auckland, offers a scenic coastal promenade that leads east to Torpedo Bay. This walk is also on the North Shore Coastal Walk and Te Araroa, and has many picturesque Victorian houses and buildings on the left side of the path. On the right, visitors can enjoy views of charming inner-city beaches, separated by small rocky points. To the east, Maungauika North Head, one of the volcanic cones on the peninsula, adds to the area's natural beauty.
Historical Significance of the Tainui Waka Monument
About halfway along the walk, you'll encounter a significant monument dedicated to the arrival of the Tainui waka (canoe) in the region in the 1300s. Māori named this area Takapuna. Erected in 1959, the monument was a joint effort between the local council and Kingitanga. Atop the monument sits a small bronze Korotangi, or weeping dove, symbolising the weeping dove made from stone that accompanied the waka from Hawaiki approximately 700 to 800 years ago.
How to Get There
The coastal promenade starts at the Devonport Ferry Terminal, making it easily accessible from Downtown Auckland by ferry.
Nearby, you can explore Maungauiki North Head and Takarunga Mt Victoria for more stunning views and historical insights, and Cheltenham and Narrow Neck with their beautiful city beaches.
