Discovering Topsy Falls
Topsy Falls is a 37-metre waterfall located on State Highway 6, north of Haast Pass in South Westland on the South Island. Although the falls are not visible from the road, the presence of a hidden gorge is noticeable as you drive by. This spot is ideal for those seeking a lesser-known waterfall with easy access.
Exploring the Gorge
Topsy Falls sits inside a narrow gorge, a very short walk from the road. As you approach the entrance on the north side of Robinson Stream, you will be able to see the lower part of the waterfall inside the gorge. For a better view, there is an unformed path that gives you a bit of height and a better view, or you can wade into the cold pool below the falls.
How to Get There
To visit Topsy Falls, travel along State Highway 6. The falls are situated about 3.5 km north of Haast Pass, 600 metres north of Wilson Creek, and approximately 1.5 km south of Fantail Falls. Look for roadside parking near the bridge over Robinson Creek. From Wānaka, it is an 87 km drive and takes about 80 minutes.
Other places to visit around Haast Pass include the Blue Pools, the Bridle Track and the Gates of Haast.
