Discovering the Blowhole Cliffs at Piha
Located in Piha, a coastal settlement on the west coast of Auckland, the Blowhole Cliffs offer a unique adventure for those seeking a less-travelled path. This hidden gem provides stunning views of an unnamed beach and the surrounding rock formations, making it a rewarding destination for photographers and those who like to be off the beaten track.
Exploring the Track and Views
Access to the Blowhole Cliffs is via a rough track that winds through young pōhutukawa trees. This path leads above the Blowhole tunnel, eventually reaching the top of the cliffs. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the unnamed beach below. The beach itself is alluring, but reaching it requires navigating through the Piha blowhole at low tide, which may involve wading, swimming, or walking.
Scenic Spots and Safety Tips
As you follow the track, it emerges onto the cliff at the northern end. A side track offers a more open area with enhanced views of the beach and bay. The striking rock formations flanking the beach are particularly photogenic, and a grassy patch provides an ideal spot for a picnic. However, the cliffs are known to be crumbly, so it is crucial to heed the advice on Auckland City boards and exercise caution near the edges.
How to Get There
To reach the Blowhole Cliffs from Piha, head southwest from the South Piha car park to the Gap. There is an area of young pōhutukawa trees and grass behind the cliffs to the southeast of the Gap. You should be able to spot a basic track into the trees, from where you will see the access to the Piha Blowhole and a rough path on your right that takes you to the clifftop. Follow this path through the pōhutukawa trees to access the cliffs.
There are numerous other places to explore around Piha. White Track to Whites Bay, Kitekite Falls and the Mercer Bay Loop are superb walks of 1 to 3 hours. Or spend time exploring the beach from end to end!
