Exploring the Beach and Surroundings

The beach features a grassy strip with bench seating, ideal for relaxing and taking in the surroundings. Although the beach is stony, it offers an intriguing environment to explore. At both ends of the beach, you'll find cliffs and rocky points with rock pools. Walking westward, you can navigate between the rocks to reach two smaller beaches nestled below the cliffs of Tapeka Point. This area is a nice spot to enjoy a quiet picnic.

Tapeka Point Track

For those seeking more adventure, the Tapeka Point Track is easily accessible from the beach. This 20-minute hike to a historic pā site on Tapeka Point rewards you with stunning views over the Bay of Islands, and is a worthwhile addition to your visit.

How to Get There

To reach Rocky Bay Reserve from central Russell, take Flagstaff Road to Tapeka Road. Just before reaching the Tapeka Point Beach car park, turn right onto De Fresne Place and park next to the beach reserve. The drive takes about five minutes, or you can opt for a 40-minute walk via Te Maiki.

Other places to explore around Russel include the Russel Museum and historic Russel, located around Kororāreka Bay. Nearby, you can also visit the location of the first capital of New Zealand at Okiato.
