Discover Pukerua Bay

Pukerua Bay, perched on a hill above Plimmerton on the Kāpiti Coast of Wellington, is a place of cinematic history and natural beauty. It was the filming location for Peter Jackson’s "Bad Taste," but the area provides more than a cinematic past. The bay features a stunning beach that is a well-kept secret among locals, providing a perfect escape for those seeking a tranquil coastal experience.

Exploring the Beach

The beach at Pukerua Bay is a striking blend of landscapes. The northern end boasts sandy shores, ideal for a leisurely stroll, while the southern end is characterised by stones and driftwood, creating a rugged and picturesque scene. A notable feature is the giant boulder with a walk-through arch, adding an element of intrigue to the beach.

This diverse setting makes it a paradise for beachcombers, offering endless opportunities to explore and capture the dramatic coastal weather in photographs.

How to Get There

To visit Pukerua Bay, travel along State Highway 59 from either direction. If coming from Wellington on the motorway, head south on State Highway 59 from the motorway offramp at Paekākāriki. The beach can be accessed from Pukerua Beach Road, or you can park at a designated area on State Highway 59, just north of the town. From there, follow the steep walkway down to the beach to enjoy the scenic beauty of this hidden gem.

A little further south of Pukerua is Te Ana-o-Hau. You walk along the coast from Pukerua or use the adjacent parking area. Look up the hill and you will spot the swing bridges on the Paekākāriki Escarpment Track.
