Exploring the Port Waikato Dunes
Located between the final stretch of the Waikato River and Sunset Beach at Port Waikato on the west coast of North Waikato, the dunes are a unique landscape to explore. These dunes extend all the way to the river mouth, providing a diverse environment that ranges from exposed sandhills to areas covered in shrubbery and a variety of non-native flowers. It is an interesting destination for those interested in coastal landscapes and ecosystems.
Navigating the Dunes
You can access the dunes from the corner of Ocean View Road and Mission Road, a short walk from the main parking area next to the beach, from maraetai Road of Maunsell Road, or through one of the entry points off the beach as you head north. Once inside, you'll find multiple well-trodden paths to explore. While walking through the dunes, be mindful of motorbikes and 4WD buggies that may also use some of these tracks.
