Alexandra Redoubt: A Historic Military Site
Alexandra Redoubt is a well-preserved historical site located high above the Waikato River, between Tuakau and Tuakau Bridge, on the route to Port Waikato. This site was strategically important during the Waikato invasion in 1863, as it protected the government's supply route from Port Waikato to Pōkeno, the main staging area for the invasion. The redoubt is notable for its role in early skirmishes with Kīngitanga forces and features a modest obelisk dedicated to the government soldiers who died in the area during 1863–64.
Historical Significance and Features
The Alexandra Redoubt is part of a series of redoubts constructed along the boundary of the Auckland region to facilitate military access during the Waikato invasion. These small temporary fortresses were crucial in maintaining control over the region. The redoubt's elevated position provided a strategic advantage, overseeing the Waikato River and the surrounding area. Today, it stands as a testament to the region's turbulent history.
Nature Walk and Scenic Views
Below the historic cemetery at the redoubt, you can enjoy a native forest loop walk. This 30-minute walk features several large rimu trees and an excellent viewpoint over the Waikato River. The trail is a peaceful contrast to the site's historical significance.
