Exploring Point Dorset on Te Kotu Mairangi / Miramar Peninsula
Point Dorset is located on Te Kotu Mairangi / Miramar Peninsula in Wellington, overlooking Breaker Bay. This area has stunning views of Wellington Harbour and its mouth, with dramatic rock formations below the cliffs, including Barrett Reef and Steeple Rock, the site of the Wahine disaster in 1968.
Discovering the Track and Scenic Views
The track to Point Dorset begins just beyond the natural arch in Breaker Bay. It ascends quickly to approximately 80 metres, offering breathtaking views both up and down the harbour. As you reach the top, the cliffs provide a striking vantage point to take in the surrounding landscape.
Cultural Significance and Sculptures
A short walk further along the track brings you to a waka sculpture, which marks the site of the former Ōruaiti Pā. This sculpture also commemorates Kupe, the legendary Polynesian explorer believed to be the first to discover Aotearoa. The area is enhanced by extensive native replanting and informative panels that provide insight into the site's historical and cultural significance. On the north side of the point, you can enjoy views over Seatoun.
Walking Routes and Connections
From Point Dorset, you have the option to embark on a longer loop walk around the point. This route connects with the track above the southeast cliffs, leading back to Tarakena Bay. Alternatively, you can walk north along the coast towards Seatoun and visit the Wahine memorial.
How to Get There
To reach Point Dorset from Central Wellington, take State Highway 1 towards the airport, then head east on Broadway at the roundabout that marks the end of the highway. Broadway crosses the Miramar Peninsula towards Seatoun. Take the right turn onto Ludlam Street, then turn right again onto Inglis Street. This takes you to the Breaker Bay car park. From there, walk northeast around Breaker Bay to find the track entrance.
Nearby on the peninsula, you can also explore Mt Crawford, Worser Bay, Scorching Bay, and Point Halswell and Shelly Bay.
