Exploring the Outlet Track: A Riverside Adventure

The Outlet Track is a scenic walkway and cycling path connecting Beacon Point on Lake Wānaka to Albert Town. This track begins at the end of Beacon Point Road, where the Clutha River / Mata-Au flows out of the lake. A walk from Beacon Point Road to the car park at the end of Gunn Road takes about 45 minutes. For an added treat, continue for another 15 minutes along Alison Avenue to enjoy a visit to the delightful Pembroke Patisserie cafe.

Riverside Scenery and Activities

The track offers a picturesque journey along the river, with several spots providing access to the water, including a large beach approximately 20 minutes from Beacon Point. The riverbanks are popular for trout fishing, making it a favourite spot for anglers.

The path winds through a mix of mānuka and kānuka scrub, interspersed with mature deciduous trees like poplars. During autumn, the foliage transforms into a vibrant display of golden hues. Some sections of the river are mirror-like in calm weather, while others feature gentle rapids.

Track Conditions and Safety

The track varies in condition, with some areas being moderately rough and narrow. There is a 2-metre drop to the river in places, and many blind corners require caution. Whether walking or cycling, be mindful of cyclists who may be approaching from either direction.

Connection to Wider Trails

The Outlet Track is part of a network of river and lakeside trails extending from Lake Hāwea to Glendhu Bay on Lake Wānaka's western side. These trails are also incorporated into Te Araroa, New Zealand's long-distance walking route.

Getting to the Outlet Track

To reach the Outlet Track, head to the end of Beacon Point Road in Wānaka. This is where the Clutha River / Mata-Au exits Lake Wānaka, marking the start of your journey. After completing the track, you can explore other nearby attractions, such as the trails leading to Lake Hāwea or Glendhu Bay.
