Discover the Pyramids at Okia Reserve
Located on the northern side of Papanui Inlet on Otago Peninsula in Dunedin, Okia Reserve is a fascinating destination for those interested in unique geological formations and scenic views. The reserve is home to two pyramid-shaped hills, aptly named the Pyramids, which offer a glimpse into the area's volcanic past. You can hike to the top of the more minor hill for expansive views.
Exploring the Pyramids
To reach the Pyramids, enter Okia Reserve from the DIck road car park and follow the flat farm road. This flat road leads directly to the Pyramids. The two pyramid-shaped hills are easily recognisable, and you can hike up the one on the right via an unmarked but obvious track. Although the path is rough, the climb is short and rewards you with a panoramic view across the dunes of Okia Flats towards Victory Beach.
Geological Features
At the top of the right-hand Pyramid, you'll find a rock platform showcasing columnar basalt formations, reminiscent of the Organ Pipes near Mt Cargill. For a clearer view of these formations, walk around to the west side of the Pyramid, where you'll also discover a sheltering rock overhang. The unique geological features and the stunning vistas make this a worthwhile stop for nature enthusiasts.
Protecting Native Wildlife
The Okia Reserve is managed by the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust to protect the breeding grounds of the native hoiho. As such, dogs are not permitted anywhere in the reserve to ensure the safety of the penguins.
How to Get There
To visit the Pyramids at Okia Reserve from Dunedin, take Portobello Road to Portobello, where it becomes Harrington Road. After 2 km, turn southeast onto Weir Road, then east onto Dick Road on the northern side of Papanui Inlet. Continue until you reach the parking area at the road's end. After exploring the Pyramids, you can continue by walking another kilometre across the Okia Flats to reach Victory Beach.
Other places to explore around the peninsula include Cape Sunders Road, Allans Beach, Sandymount and Sandfly Bay.
