Discovering Nicholson Park

Nicholson Park is situated in the suburb of Scarborough, Christchurch, and spans four hectares atop Sumner Head. Positioned 100 metres above the coastline, this park is set on steep terrain featuring a mix of exotic trees and native regrowth. Near the summit, you will find a flat, grassy area equipped with a playground, seating, and picnic spots. The park provides stunning coastal views, making it a worthwhile visit.

Walking Tracks and Scenic Views

You can reach Nicholson Park on foot via two tracks. The Scarborough Track offers a gradual ascent from Sumner or Scarborough Beach, while the Flowers Track presents a steeper, more direct climb that can become slippery when wet. Both paths reward you with impressive views of Sumner, New Brighton, and the Southern Alps. The walk to the top typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Once at the summit, you can extend your walk by connecting to the Taylors Mistake Track. This track also links to the Pilgrims Way Track and eventually the Godley Head Loop Track at Awaroa / Godley Head.

Driving Access and Parking

For those who prefer to drive, access to Nicholson Park is available via Heberden Avenue at the southern end of Sumner, which becomes Scarborough Road. Parking is available next to the park at the hill's summit.
