Discover Monro Beach
Monro Beach is a captivating sandy stretch near Lake Moeraki in South Westland on the West Coast of the South Island. Lying between two rocky points, this beach is accessible via the Monro Beach Walk. In spring, it becomes a prime spot for observing the rare Fiordland crested penguin, known locally as tawaki. Additionally, you might spot Hector dolphins, sea lions, and seals in the area.
Enjoying the Beach Despite Sandflies
While Monro Beach is an inviting place to linger, sandflies can be a nuisance. On days when they are particularly bothersome, you might find yourself retreating to the safety of the nearby forest; sandflies are not present in forests. To make the most of your visit, consider using insect repellent, choosing a sunny day with a breeze, or visiting in Winter, when sandflies are less active. Or take photos while you walk!
How to Get There
Monro Beach lies within the wilderness area on State Highway 6, between Ship Creek and Lake Paringa, with Lake Moeraki about halfway between. As you approach Lake Moeraki from the south, you cross the Moeraki River and see the Moeraki Wilderness Lodge on the left. The access road to the Monro Beach Beach Walk car park and trailhead is immediately after the lodge entrance.
From the trailhead, you can also do the Lower Moeraki River Walk. At Ship Creek, there are the Dune Lake Walk and the Swamp Forest Walk. Between Lake Moeraki and Lake Paringa, you can explore the Haast to Paringa Catlle Track.
