Exploring the Milford Sound Walking Track

Situated in Milford Sound in the heart of Fiordland National Park, the Milford Sound Walking Track is a loop trail that begins at the main car park in Milford Sound. This accessible track allows you to explore the southern edge of Freshwater Basin, meandering through native trees and shrubs. It provides a chance to immerse yourself in the area's natural beauty and learn about its unique ecosystem.

Scenic Highlights and Natural Beauty

As you walk along the track, you'll encounter several viewpoints that highlight the dramatic landscape, with the towering Mitre Peak rising to 1,683 metres. Informative panels along the way offer insights into the region's diverse flora and fauna.

The track also offers stunning reflections of the surrounding forest and mountains in the basin's waters, especially when the water is calm at high tide. During low tide, you can explore the sandy flats, discovering unusual driftwood and vibrant green seaweed tufts. From here, the track also provides excellent views of Bowen Falls, which cascades down 162 metres.

You can continue the walk to the Milford Lodge and Campground, nestled among striking beech trees. Keep an eye out for kea around the lodge.

How to Get There

The Milford Sound Walking Track starts next to the main Milford Sound car park. The car park is at the end of State Highway 94, which connects Te Anau to Milford Sound. This scenic drive through Fiordland National Park is an adventure in itself, with numerous opportunities to stop and admire the area's natural beauty.

In addition to the walking track, you can also enjoy a half-day walk to Giant Gate Falls on the Milford Track, which includes a water taxi across Deepwater Basin, or take a boat ride up the sound.
