Maraetotara Falls

Discovering Maraetōtara Falls

Maraetōtara Falls is nestled between Te Mata Peak and Ocean Beach in Hawke Bay, east of Napier. There are two stunning waterfalls, making it a particularly worthwhile stop, even though it is not that well-known. The falls are easily accessible, providing a quick escape into nature.

Exploring the Waterfalls

The walk from the car park to the path alongside the stream below the falls is brief. The path leads directly to the two waterfalls, offering a scenic view that is especially captivating during or after a rainstorm. We were there during a storm, and the increased water flow created a dramatic spectacle. However, be prepared for the track to be partially flooded in wet conditions, adding an element of adventure to your visit.

You can also walk back along the track beside the stream and below the road, weather permitting.

How to Get There

To reach Maraetōtara Falls, take Waimarama Road from the east side of Havelock North and follow this for about 15 km, then turn onto Maraetōtara Road before Waimarama Road becomes Ocean Beach Road. Continue for about 3 kilometres until you see a sign for Maraetōtara Falls. There is roadside parking available near the sign, and the track access is right there.

After the waterfalls, you can also continue on Waimarama Road to reach Ocean Beach Road, and Ocean Beach on the Pacific coast, or veer right to stay on Waimarama Road, which takes you to the beach settlement of Waimarana.
