Lower Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway

Kaikōura Peninsula's Unique Rock Platform

Located on the southeast side of the Kaikōura Peninsula, the rock platform is a fascinating geological feature that emerged after the 2016 earthquake. This natural wonder, now mostly bleached white, is from the car park at the northeast end of he peninsula. From there, you have the option to walk directly onto the rock platform, on the Lower Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway.

Discovering Seabird and Seal Colonies

As you follow the base of the cliff, you'll encounter a protected seabird breeding area. The sheer number of gulls is impressive, and their loud calls serve as a natural boundary marker. Continuing along this path will lead you to the main seal colony, where you can observe these marine mammals in their natural habitat.

As you approach the end of the walk and platform, you can take a track to the top of he cliff and return on the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway.

How to Get There

To reach the rock platform and car park from State Highway 1, via the town centre, take either Kilarney Street or West End to Esplanade Road. Follow Esplanade Road around the north side of the Peninsula, with name changes to Avoca Street, then Fyffe Quay, to the car park at Point Kean. The drive takes about 8 minutes (5 km).

In Kaikōura, you can also visit the beaches and shoreline on the north and south sides of the peninsula. If you are touring through the region, take the scenic Inland Road to Waiau and Hanmer Springs, instead of SH1.
