Loganburn Reservoir

Loganburn Reservoir in the Otago Highlands

Loganburn Reservoir provides a blend of high tussock country beauty and recreational activities, a short drive east of Alexandra. The reservoir is one of several reservoirs located in the Central Otago highlands, and was developed in the 1980s to provide irrigation for 60 farms and 9,300 hectares in the Maniototo Plain. This transformation turned what were once arid rasslands into fertile farmland on the plain.

The reservoir was created by damming the Logan Burn, which led to the displacement of the Great Moss Swamp, originally spanning about 500 hectares. Today, the reservoir also features a small power generator that activates when irrigation water is released.

Fishing and Hiking Opportunities

While a remnant of the Great Moss Swamp still exists in the southwest corner of the reservoir, reaching it requires a bit of a hike. For a more accessible adventure, you can explore the area around the reservoir and head to the dam. This spot is ideal for trying your luck at catching brown trout, a popular activity for anglers visiting the area.

Navigating Old Dunstan Road

The Old Dunstan Road, which runs along the east side of the reservoir, is generally accessible in a 2WD from Clarks Junction on State Highway 87. However, it can become quite muddy during wet conditions. It's best to take the route in dry conditions or with a 4WD.

Getting to Loganburn Reservoir

To reach Loganburn Reservoir, take State Highway 87 to Clark Junction, then follow Old Dunstan Road to the reservoir.

You can also visit Lake Onslow, Upper Manorburn Reservoir and Pollburn Reservoir in the Otago highlands, and Lower Manorburn Dam near Alexandra.
