Larnach Castle

Discover Larnach Castle on the Otago Peninsula

Located on the scenic Otago Peninsula of Dunedin, Larnach Castle is an ideal destination, especially when the weather turns unfavourable. This historic site offers an interesting self-guided indoor tour, complemented by one of New Zealand's most well-established gardens and an inviting café. Open nearly every day of the year, you can enter by paying at the gate on the access driveway.

A Glimpse into History

Constructed in the 1870s by William Larnach and his family, the castle showcases a Gothic Revival architectural style. Originally referred to as "the Camp" by the family, locals soon dubbed it a castle, likely due to its distinctive turret. The current owners have meticulously restored the interior, making it a unique landmark in New Zealand.

A National Garden

The gardens at Larnach Castle are nationally recognised. Even on the drab day we visited, they were full of flowers and colour, with a fabulous mixture of NZ natives, such as the kōwhai ngutukākā (kākā beak flower) and exotics. The garden has a mix of themes, but it all works well together.

Mature trees frame the gardens, and within this is a substantial lawn with a pool and fountain to the front of the house, then a series of themed gardens around the sides and back. There are a variety of sculptures scattered around the gardens and even a “ruin” as a bonus.

The gift shop at the castle's entry provides a map that marks the key features.

The Larnach Family Legacy

Inside, you will find a series of informative boards detailing the Larnach family's history, marked by both remarkable success and profound tragedy, including the suicide of William Larnach in 1898, who was a Member of Parliament at the time. This tumultuous past led to the sale of the castle in 1905. Over the years, it changed hands multiple times and fell into disrepair until the Barker family acquired it in the 1960s, dedicating themselves to its restoration. Don't miss the opportunity to watch the video that captures this fascinating journey.

How to Get There

To visit Larnach Castle, head to the Otago Peninsula from State Highway in central Dunedin, take Jetty Street, then Wharf Street and Portsmouth Drive around the southern edge of Otago Harbour to Portobello Road. Follow Portobello Road to Company Bay, then take Castlewood Road to the ridge of the Peninsula. Turn right onto Camp Road, and the castle is accessible via a driveway where you can pay the entry fee. You can also reach the castle on Highcliff Road, with spectacular views of the harbour and Dunedin.

While exploring the area, you can visit one of the peninsula's remote east-side beaches, such as Tomahawk Beach, Sandfly Bay, Allans Beach and Victory Beach, or continue along Portobello Road to Portobello, then Taiaroa Head.
