Explore Kohuroa / Matheson Bay
Kohuroa / Matheson Bay is a sheltered, compact beach between Ti Point and Leigh on the Matakana Coast of Auckland. It’s perfect for safe swimming, kayaking, and coastal exploring. Backed by grassy reserves and the hidden gem of the Kohuroa Stream Track, it’s a favourite day trip spot for families.
A Sheltered Bay with Coastal Adventures
Protected by a reef and a small island, the bay’s calm waters are ideal for swimming and kayaking. A pontoon is anchored in summer, and the bay is popular with dive schools for training. At low tide, you can walk around the rocky headlands, explore rockpools, spot fossils, or follow the coastal rocks north to connect with the Leigh Coastal Walk. Orca, dolphins, and even whales are sometimes seen here.
The Kohuroa Stream divides the beach, with a footbridge linking both sides. Large grassed areas make it easy to set up for picnics, beach games, or just reading a book in the sun.
The Kohuroa Stream Track – A Hidden Gem
From the west side of the stream, the 40-minute return Kohuroa Stream Track winds through regrowth forest to Leigh Road. Boardwalks and steps follow the stream past waterfalls and pools, including a large swimming hole with a rope swing. The upper reaches pass through groves of mature kauri, rimu, tōtara, and kahikatea, with birds such as kākā, kererū, and fantails often seen.
You can return the same way or make a loop by walking one of the nearby roads back to the bay.
History
Matheson Bay takes its European name from brothers Angus and Duncan Matheson, who arrived in Waipu in 1857 on the Spray and later moved here for shipbuilding. An anchor recovered from the bay is displayed on the eastern hill, and heavy mooring chains from the boatbuilding era still lie on the seabed. The Māori name Kohuroa reflects older traditions, and the bay’s sheltered waters have long been valued for their resources.
