Exploring the Kahikatea Walk, Peel Forest
Located in the Peel Forest area on the west side of Rangitata Gorge Road, the Kahikatea Walk is a flat, easy track that offers a glimpse into the region's natural beauty and history. This 1.9 km loop is perfect for those interested in exploring wetland areas and regrowth forests, with boardwalks ensuring a comfortable walk over the wetlands.
Discovering Historical and Natural Features
Kahikatea Track meanders between Te Wanahu Flat and Clarke Flat, passing through open grassed areas and regrowth forest, where you might spot mature trees that have survived past logging activities. Along the way, you'll encounter old saw pits, remnants of the area's logging history. These pits are signposted, providing insight into how trees were once cut and milled on-site. The regrowth forest you see today is all that remains of the original kahikatea swamp forest.
Additionally, the track is lined with kōwhai trees, which add vibrant colour to the landscape in spring. At Clarke Flat, a visitor's shelter features a large information panel detailing the local flora, fauna, and conservation efforts.
How to get there
