Acland Falls Track in Peel Forest

Located in Peel Forest, South Canterbury, the Acland Falls Track is a rewarding short walk named after early settler John Acland. This track offers a scenic journey through a regrowth forest, culminating in a view of a 14-metre waterfall. The falls are accessible via a short walk up the streambed, providing a tranquil spot to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Walking the Acland Falls Track

The track begins at the northwest corner of Te Wanahu Flat. As you head north, you'll encounter a steep 120-metre climb through the forest. This is followed by a gentler 60-metre descent leading to a stream. The waterfall itself is relatively gentle and can be reached by a brief walk along the stream bed.

Completing the Loop

For those interested in a loop walk, you can continue southeast from the falls to Cain Flat. From there, you have the option to walk back down the road or connect with the Kahikatea Walk. The entire loop is approximately 1 kilometre from Te Wanahu Flat on Rangitata Gorge Road and 600 metres from Cain Flat, taking about 30 minutes to complete.

How to Get There

Te Wanahu Flat is the main car park for Peel Forest, located on Rangitata Gorge Road. To reach Peel Forest from Geraldine. Take State Highway 79 north to Peel Forest Road, then follow this north. The road becomes Rangitata Gorge Road, and you will see the Te Wanahu Flat on the left side. The track starts at the northwest corner of the flat.
