Greenstone Station Road

Greenstone Station Road is a scenic 12 km drive on a gravel road south from Kinloch to Greenstone Station. There is a large car park at the end of the road, which is also the starting point of the Greenstone and Caples Tracks and Lake Rere Walk. There are three fords on the road that are generally safe to cross in a 2WD car.

The drive starts through a 4 km coastal strip of mature and regrowth beech forest. After exiting the forest, it climbs through mostly farmland and scrub up the steep side of the Humboldt Mountains to around 100 metres above the lake on the northwest side of Lake Wakatipu. There are several places where you can stop for fabulous east-facing views of the lake, Pigeon Island/Wāwāhi Waka, and the Richardson Mountains.

Most of the photos were taken in the late afternoon when the lake was unusually still.
