Diamond Creek Walk

Diamond Creek Walk is an easy walk alongside Diamond Creek to small Lake Reid, north of Lake Wakatipu. The creek follows the steep east side of Mount Alfred, which marks the western edge of the Rees Valley, and is very active and deep in some sections. There are even some mesmerising small whirlpools, and it's more of a small river than a creek. Take care with small children, as it is deceptive!

The track starts on Priory Road, which runs south of Mt Alfred and connects the Rees Valley and Dart Valley. It follows the east bank of the creek and is mostly open and grassed. The valley flats to the east are farmed, and large pools of water can develop after rain, which may also affect the track. Along the way, there are numerous close-up views of the stream. About halfway along, the trees and shrubs transition to mainly native beech forest and tree ferns on the side of Mount Alfred. The last section of the creek is less active, resulting in excellent reflections of the surrounding mountains.

Both the stream and the lake are popular for trout fishing, and Chinook salmon can be found there in April and May. At the lake, there is plenty of space for a picnic or to further perfect your fly fishing skills. The lake is shallow, so you’ll be tempted to wade in, but beware of mud!

The track is just a 15-minute drive from Glenorchy. Take Glenorcy Paradise Road across the Rees Bridge, then turn onto Priory Road (staying on the sealed road). The car park and track access are 700 metres along the road.
