A Historic Venue in Whanganui
Cooks Gardens is a prominent athletics and cycling venue situated on the southwest side of downtown Whanganui. This location became famous in the 1960s when runner Peter Snell set a world record for the fastest mile.
Exploring the Gardens and Monuments
The park rises steeply from the city side, naturally dividing the two stadiums. Visitors can access the park by climbing the steps through the significant commemorative entrance on Hill Street.
At the start of the path, you will find a small plaque marking Peter Snell's extraordinary achievement. Further along, there is a monument for New Zealand's participation in the Boer War of the early 1900s. For those seeking a panoramic view, the bell tower at the hill's summit offers a vantage point.
How to Get There
Cooks Gardens is located on Saint Hill Street on the southwest side of downtown Whanganui. It is a few minutes walk from the city centre. Along the way, keep an eye out for the other historic Whanganui buildings and the array of public artworks around the town.
