Located less than a 25-minute drive from downtown Whanganui, Paloma Gardens is a hidden gem in the rural hinterland of the Whanganui region. Owned by Nicki and Clive Higgie, these gardens are surrounded by rolling farmland and have been designated a "garden of national significance." The gardens are a special experience with their diverse plant collections and artistic sculptures.

Paloma Gardens have been developed over decades, resulting in a well-established and diverse landscape. The gardens are divided into several zones, including the Palm Garden, the Desert House, and the intriguingly named Garden of Death.
The arboreta primarily feature exotic plants, with an impressive array of international species, including extensive collections of cacti. Many of these plants are rare and may be unfamiliar to you. Additionally, the gardens are adorned with sculptures by artists such as Steuart Welch, Simone Jacquat, and Clive Higgie, adding an artistic touch to their beauty.
Motorbike Collection
For motorbike enthusiasts, the larger building next to the car park houses an impressive collection of bikes, providing an added attraction for visitors with varied interests.
Getting to Paloma Gardens
To reach Paloma Gardens from the east side of Whanganui, take Portal Street to No. 2 Line, pass through the township of Fordell, and turn left onto Denlair Road. There is a $10 per person entry fee, payable in cash via an honesty box at the entrance. The drive is 20 km and takes 20 minutes.
