Cape Campbell: A Remote Coastal Gem
Cape Campbell is situated at the easternmost point of the South Island. This location offers a unique sense of isolation, making it a captivating destination for those seeking solitude.
The area features an expansive empty beach to the east of better-known Marfells Beach and campsite, but it's important to be mindful of the paths used by 4WD vehicles when setting up for a day by the sea. From this beach, there are stunning views of the Cape Campbell lighthouse, perched dramatically on cliffs that display a striking palette of white, grey, and gold hues above the beach.
How to Get There
To reach Cape Campbell from Blenheim, head southeast on State Highway 1 towards Seddon. Take Marfells Beach Road around the south side of Lake Grassmere to Marfells Beach. From there, you can drive a 4WD around Mussel Point and along the beach, backed by stunning cliffs, to the lighthouse at low tide. Or you can walk for 6.5 km, about 2 hours each way.
Nearby, you can also explore Ward Beach, with an array of interesting rock formations, and the wineries of the Awatere Valley.
