Discovering Bridal Veil Falls in Waikato

Bridal Veil Falls, located in the Wairēinga Scenic Reserve in Central Waikato, is a striking natural feature that draws visitors with its impressive 55-metre drop. Formed around two million years ago by an eruption from the nearby Okete vent, the waterfall cascades over a basalt cliff. There are multiple dramatic viewpoints of the falls. Established in the mid-1880s, the reserve is an early example of conservation in the face of the mass deforestation and the conversion of land to farmland taking place at the time.

Walking to the Falls

The walk to Bridal Veil Falls is short and easy, through a predominantly tawa native forest. As you approach the falls, you'll find a platform at the top with an up-close, breathtaking view of the waterfall's descent. To reach the base, descend a steep series of 261 steps, with an additional viewing platform about halfway down providing a different perspective of the falls. The walk to the falls takes about 20 minutes each way.

While the waterfall is visually stunning, swimming in the pool at its base is not recommended. The Pakoka River, which feeds the falls, flows through farmland, resulting in poor water quality that makes swimming unsafe.

How to Get There

To visit Wairēinga from Hamilton, take State Highway 23 towards Raglan. Before reaching Raglan, turn left onto Te Mata Road. Continue on Te Mata Road and then turn left onto Kawhia Road, where you'll find the car park shortly after. Given its popularity, it's best to visit outside peak holiday times. The drive from Hamilton takes 45 minutes and 50 km. From Ragaln, the drive is 20 minutes and 20 km.

Around nearby Raglan, drive down Wainui Road and check out Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay and Whale Bay.
