Wainui Road, Raglan

Scenic Drive from Raglan to Surf Beaches

Wainui Road offers a picturesque route connecting Raglan to its renowned western surf beaches: Ngarunui Beach, Manu Bay, and Whale Bay. This 8.3 km stretch is short but incredibly scenic. The road initially traces and then crosses one of the tidal inlets of Whaingaroa Harbour, providing stunning views of Mount Karioi as it approaches the coast.

After passing the access road to Ngarunui Beach, Wainui Road ascends the steep coastal hills at the northeastern end of Mount Karioi, surrounded by a mix of farmland and native forest regrowth. Notable viewpoints include a parking area near the entrance to Manu Bay and a discreet rest area 200 metres before Whale Bay.

Exploring Beyond Whale Bay

Beyond Whale Bay, Wainui Road transitions into Whaanga Road. This gravel road is even windier and narrower, often flanked by regenerating forest. The drive to the Ruapuke Beach campground and access road spans 14 km and is best taken slowly. Along the way, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view at Te Toto Gorge, which is a 10-minute stop, or embark on a more challenging hike up the Mount Karioi Track, which takes 4 to 5 hours for a return trip.

How to Get There

Wainui Road starts off Bow Street, the main street in central Ragaln.

Other nearby options include Wainui Bush Park, off Wainui Road, Ann Point and Wainamu Beach on the harbour mouth.
