The journey from Omarama to Kurow on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail takes you through the scenic Waitaki Valley, offering a mix of cycling experiences. This section is primarily rated as Grade 2, with some more challenging Grade 3 parts. The trail provides a unique opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes of the region, including lakes, dams, and historical sites.

Cycling from Omarama to Sailors Cutting

Starting in Omarama, you will head east along the Waitaki Valley. The trail begins off-road, leading you to the top of the Chain Hills, approximately 5 km from Omarama. From there, you will descend alongside State Highway 83. The path then follows the edge of Lake Benmore, reaching Pumpkin Point after 10 km. Continuing along the lake, you will arrive at Sailors Cutting, a picturesque spot ideal for a break.

Navigating the Lake Benmore Dam to Aviemore Dam

Beyond Sailors Cutting, the trail heads towards the Lake Benmore Dam. This segment includes a mix of Grade 2 and some narrower, steeper Grade 3 sections carved into the hillsides. Safety barriers are installed where there are significant drops, so exercise caution. Don't hesitate to walk your bike if necessary. From the Lake Benmore Dam, you have the option to detour into Otematata for food and accommodation or continue across the dam. The trail then follows the eastern side of Lake Aviemore, crossing at the Aviemore Dam. This part of the trail is a fast and easy backroad, offering several pleasant spots to pause, including the short Deep Stream walk near the dam.

Reaching Kurow via Lake Waitaki

After crossing the Aviemore Dam, the trail continues along State Highway 83 towards Lake Waitaki and its dam, covering a distance of 36 km before reaching Kurow. This section is rich in hydroelectric history, with dams and former project towns adding interest to your ride.

Getting to the Start of the Trail

To begin your cycling adventure, make your way to Omarama, which is accessible by road. From there, you can follow the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail eastward through the Waitaki Valley. If you're interested in exploring more of the area, consider visiting nearby attractions such as the Clay Cliffs or the hot tubs in Omarama.
