Ocean Beach and Fossil Point
There is more than one “Ocean Beach” in NZ. This one is a long, empty, remote and spectacular beach at the northwest end of Farewell Spit. It is fringed by dunes, mostly covered in dune grass and native scrub. From the Farewell Spit car park the fastest way to the beach is on Fossil Point Track.
From the beach, to get to Fossil Point, cross the stream and then head towards the cliffs that are at the west end of the beach. Below the cliffs is Fossil Point, a flat dark rocky outcrop. But some of the rocks immediately below the cliff are more interesting, having been carved by water and wind into a range of quite organic shapes.
