Nelson in Tasman Bay is just the right size for a city day walk. The city centre is more or less bounded by Rutherford Street to the west, the Maitai River to the northeast and Church Hill to the south. The town centre is attractive, with the normal assortment of good cafes with great coffee, bars and other eateries. There is also a well known large market on Saturday mornings at Montgomery Square.

Church Hill is a highlight of the downtown, with the large and unusual in its design Christ Church Cathedral, surrounded by a Victorian style traditional garden and large exotic trees. From there, it is a short walk to Queens Gardens, the Maitai River and then on to Botanical Hill.
