Milford Sound Walking Track

The Milford Sound Walking Track is an easy loop track that starts at the main Milford Sound car park and follows the southern edge of Freshwater Basin, partly through native trees and shrubs. There are several good views of the sounds, dominated by Mitre Peak (1,683 metres) and several panels that describe the region and its flora and fauna. The track continues past the airport to Milford Lodge and Campground, set within striking beech trees.

You can get fantastic reflections in the basin's waters from the surrounding forest and mountains if the water is calm enough at high tide. At low tide, you can walk out onto the sandy flats with unusual driftwood and bright green seaweed tufts. In addition to views of the sound and Mitre Peak, you get an excellent view of Bowen Falls (162 metres). Golden hour can be particularly spectacular if the sky is clear enough.
