Mercer Bay Loop

Mercer Bay Loop

This is a popular walk in the Karekare to Piha part of the Waitakere Ranges. Easiest access is from Log Race Rd, off the end of Ahuahu Rd, above Piha. There is quite a large parking area at the historic site of a WW2 radar station.

From there, head along the west side track then follow the cliff line to a fantastic viewpoint on Te Ahua Point. At various points, you can look back to Piha, down to Mercer Bay and along the southern coast past Karekare towards Whatipu.

The hike back up on the east side of the loop is moderately steep and strenuous and looks mostly back across the Waitakere Ranges.

Overall, it takes only a slow 90 minutes or so to do the loop back to the carpark and experience some of the best coastal views in Aotearoa NZ.
