Following Aotea Road on Aotea, Great Barrier Island, there are a couple of fantastic viewpoints over Whangapoua Beach. At the bottom of the range, take the turn to the Whangapoua Campsite. There is a massive sandy lagoon between the campsite and the beach that largely drains as the tide goes out.
It's very photogenic, but it’s about a kilometre to the south end of the beach, and then the beach is over 3 km long.
