Torpedo Bay

From Devonport, walk east around the coast promenade to Torpedo Bay, a section of the North Shore Coastal Walk. On the left are some of the city's prettiest Victorian houses and buildings. On the right are a couple of nice inner city beaches separated by small rocky points. To the east is Maungauiki North Head, the second of the volcano cones on the peninsula.

About halfway along, there is also a monument to the arrival of the Tainui waka (canoe) in the area, which the Maori occupants named Takapuna. The monument was built in 1959 as a collaboration between the local council and Kingitanga. The small bronze Korotangi (weeping dove) on the top of the monument commemorates the stone weeping dove that travelled with the waka from Hawaiki over 800 years ago.
