The Organ Pipes is an interesting rock formation on the walkway leading to the top of 676-metre Mt Cargill, Dunedin. You can walk up Mt Cargill all the way from near sea level from a few different access points, but if you’d just like to see the pipes, start about halfway up on Mt Cargill Road, above Port Chalmers. From here, it’s about twenty minutes of walking, with a 120-metre climb, to reach the Organ Pipes on the side of Mt Holmes.
When you find the Organ Pipes, you’ll initially see what looks like a steep pile of tube-like rubble – these are sections of the pipes that have eroded and collapsed over time. Don’t worry, the pile is stable, and a few minutes of scrambling will get you to the top, where the pipes are still intact. From there, enjoy magnificent views!
From the Organ Pipes, you can walk for another 20 minutes or so to the top of Mt Cargill.
