The unnamed plateau you will encounter driving along the Taihape-Napier Road is quite extraordinary. In part, this is because it is farmed and was amazingly green when we drove through, despite being a high plateau on the east side of New Zealand. To the west, you can sometimes make out Ruapehu in good weather, but it was quite cold and windy at 900 metres on a plateau!
When you get to the junction at the end of Te Moehau Road, you can head to SH1 by going south to Taihape or west towards Waiouru.
