Pelorus Sound Viewpoint

Pelorus Sound Viewpoint is on spectacular Queen Charlotte Drive. Shortly before arriving at Havelock, there is a car park and a short walk to Cullen Point, which has a high point 180 metres above Pelorus Sound. This provides wide, spectacular views of Pelorus Sound and Havelock. If you have more time, there is a track around the point and a short climb to the top.

Pelorus Sound was first mapped in 1838 by Philip Chetwode in HMS Pelorus. The name also appears in other places around Marlborough, such as Pelorus River and Pelorus Bridge. Curiously, a pelorus was a navigational instrument used on sailing ships and named after one of Hannibal’s navigators around 203 BC(!).
